BIOGRAPHY
Ara Thorose (b. 1978) is an Armenian-American artist from Los Angeles, currently based in NY. He holds an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. As an undergraduate at University of California Irvine, he studied Sociology with a focus on gender and sexuality.
In 2021, Thorose was an honoree of Sight Unseen’s American Design Hotlist and received Interior Design Magazine’s award for Rising Star in Design. That year, the 7M Chair was acquired by Cranbrook Art Museum as part of its permanent collection.
From his debut in 2016, the critical attention garnered by Thorose’s work started a trend for cylindrical forms in design. Since then it’s been continually featured in trend forecasts subscribed to by the greater design industry. Similar looking work by other designers now proliferates the design arena, furthering Thorose’s influence on contemporary form.
Thorose produces approximately 20 pieces per year. His work is currently being represented by Carvalho Park and Love House in NYC, and Twentieth in Los Angeles. He is currently making a custom sofa commissioned by Fox Nahem that will feature in an editorial for Elle Decor in 2023. Thorose is also working on a collaboration with French artist Guillaume Linard Osario for a show at Contemporary Cluster in Rome in fall 2023.
